Natural Remedies for Morning Sickness

Morning sickness can often make the first trimester of pregnancy a struggle for many women. I remember it all too well with my pregnancies, but luckily I was able to manage it really well with some simple home remedies.

Nausea and vomiting during pregnancy is caused by hormonal changes and can be made worse by vitamin deficiencies, low blood sugar, strong odours (food, perfumes etc) and stress.

Morning sickness is usually the worst between the 6th and 12th weeks of pregnancy but in some women it can last longer and throughout the entire pregnancy.

 

Below are my top tips for helping ease the nausea!

  • Vitamin B-6, taken as 25 mg every 8 hours, has been shown to have a significant effect in alleviating nausea and vomiting.
  • Ginger is known as an anti-emetic which means it has anti nausea effects. You can sip on it throughout the day. I used to fill a big thermos and carry it everywhere! Or you take ginger root in capsule or tincture form.
  • Take homeopathic Nux Vomica which you can get from a homeopath or naturopath
  • Keep a box of crackers by your bed and eat a few before getting out of bed in the morning. Low blood sugar can make nausea worse.
  • Avoid spicy, fried, rich, fatty, and greasy foods. Also avoid any caffeine which can also worsen symptoms.
  • Eat protein at every meal and snack to help balance blood sugar such as nuts, seeds, greek yoghurt, beans/legumes ect to stabalise blood sugar.
  • Stay hydrated with plenty of filteted water and herbal tea. If water won't stay down, try frozen natural juice popsicles.
  • Try wear motion sickness wrist bands which act on pressure points
  • Get acupuncture or reflexology treatments. In TCM nausea is considered to be 'rebellious qi' that rises and causes nausea and vomiting during pregnancy
