Top Herbs for Postnatal Depression

As many as 1 in 5 new mothers experience postnatal depression within the first year. It is often a slow onset developing from 2-3 weeks postpartum and includes symptoms such as irritability, depression, guilt, hopelessness, chronic exhaustion, inability to cope, fear, inadequacy and lack of joy.

There are a huge range of factors which contribute to the development of this condition including lack of social support, low socioeconomic class, poor marital relationship, single motherhood, unplanned pregnancy, history of depression, difficult infant temperement, social pressures, hypothyroidism and negative/traumatic birth experience.

Nutritional deficiencies have also been linked to increased rates of postnatal depression including B Vitamins, Omega 3 Fatty Acids, Zinc, Iron and protein which is why optimal pregnancy and postnatal nutrition is essential!

So what about treatment for postnatal depression?

Conventional treatment often involves the controversial use of psychotropic drugs such as SSRI antidepressant medication. The reason why they are controversial is because of the possible side effects in breastfeeding mothers such as sedation, respiratory effects and withdrawal symptoms in the nursing infant. More research needs to be done in this area!

Fortuantely there are many wonderful and safe herbs that can support mothers with postnatal depression. I have listed my favourites below!

  • ADAPTOGENS - These herbs increase the mothers resistance to stress and decrease cortisol levels. For example, Withania, Schisandra and Shatavari
  • SEDATIVES - Natural sedatives such as Chamomile, Lemon Balm, Skullcap and Passionflower help to calm and relax the nervous system
  • NERVINE TONICS - These herbs support, nurture and restore the nervous system including Milky Oats and St Johns Wort
  • ANXIOLTICS - This category of herbs have anti anxiety effects and include Motherwort, Passionflower and Lemon Balm
